And this is all I have to check the pressure, can’t get it precisely 32 PSI. On a scale of 1 to Jalopnik FP Asshat, how screwed am I?

PS: I really hate lug bolts. Especially when mounting the fronts.

Well... it’s for a few weeks only until Solstice returns. I technically don’t need to do it, but parents are visiting so it’s coming back out in the Fall early.

It is much quieter than the winters though, especially when it’s friggin 16C outside.

You have the wrong tool. Those stick-out tire gauges are garbage. Get you one of these:

Is it a $60 tire gauge? Yeah it is. Is that a lot to pay for a tire gauge? Maybe, but you know why it’s $60? Because it’s worth it.

Also, look into a studs conversion. It makes mounting wheels quite a bit easier.

That would drive me insane. Does the wheel at least seat onto the hub, so you don’t have to hold the wheel while you try and line up a bolt?

Oh it does, it’s still hub centric. Rear isn’t so much a problem since the handbrake holds it in place, but front spins along with the wheel, that’s why it’s a pain.

Lug bolts on most BMW, VW/Audi, some Saturns (Opels) etc. Yup. Some of my home tire shop business has come from a couple BMW guys who had their hubs stripped by a local tire chain where the mechanics were jamming the bolts in with their impact guns without starting the threads by hand... then my reputation spreads by word of mouth...

It’s a piss poor design, dressed up as superior technology. absolutely a pain in the ass to work with, especially since the hub slightly rusts to the wheel, which requires pouring hot water over the hub. Yes.

Yeah, my brother used to work at Sears Auto and then NTB part-time, it was a fun evening/weekend gig for him and free tire installation for us. But when his real job started demanding more travel from him, he ended up quitting the tire tech thing... so we went shopping. Found a nice old Coats rim clamp on CL that had a 110V turntable (most were air powered), and a high speed balancer... spent about $1800 total and started taking jobs on the side for neighbors/friends/whoever hears about us by word of mouth. It’s nice to be able to take the time to balance something right, or diagnose a rim issue or something most chains won’t deal with. I’ve also done a lot of dismount, remove bead corrosion, clearcoat inside of rim, then remount 2 days later (after clearcoat cures) - that’s something the chains don’t have time to deal with either.
